Our Purpose
Representation matters. A government can best serve the needs of its people when it reflects its people. Yet it is not reflecting its people. Less than ⅓ of elected officials nationwide are women, though women comprise more than half of the US population. Less than 8% of elected officials are women of color, though women of color comprise 20% of the US population. This MUST change.
The fact is: when women run for office, they are elected at the same rate as men. Yet in 2020, when the most ever women ran for office, fewer than 30% of candidates for Congress were women. If we want more women to take office, we need more women to run for office. Accomplishing that isn’t something we can do simply through recruitment, as it takes years to develop the skills, the knowledge, the resources, and most importantly, the confidence to run. To truly set women up for success in attaining and holding elected office, we must invest in our young women early, and we must actively reach out to young women who have not historically been tapped for leadership.
At DemocraShe, we believe the future depends on brave, transformational leadership. Instead of training young women to fit into an existing political system and ideology, it’s critical to empower them to build a deeper, greater Democracy that truly serves – and inspires - its people.
